Astronaut Leroy Chiao Space Blog-the Pyramids
Here's a photo of the Pyramids that I shot today. Easier to see than the Great Wall! This is an 800mm shot. I had gotten one of the area early in the mission, using a 180mm. This was a fortuitous photo. Since it wasn't planned, I had to grab the first camera in sight. Unfortunately, this camera is an old one and was kind of dirty, hence the piece of debris that's visible!  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-China-Russia Border
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-China-Russia Border: This is a photo from the next orbital pass. It is of the border region between China and Russia, near Mongolia. This mountainous region is very striking and I was able to capture a detailed photo using an 800mm lens.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog- Beijing
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Beijing: I finally shot a decent picture of Beijing. It is surprisingly difficult! There is often dense smog in the Eastern coastal areas of China, and visibility gets even worse with low sun angles. So, everything has to be right for the shot to even be set up correctly. I was also fortunate with this pass, that the weather was clear and there was light snow cover on the ground, enhancing the view of the city. This is a 400mm shot, I wanted to get the whole core of the city inside of the frame.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Greece: I had read about the Rion-Antirion bridge in Greece, which was recently completed. By some definitions, it is the worlds largest suspension bridge. I had first noticed it at night, each of the pylons was glowing blue as we flew over. I managed a photo some time later, using a 180mm lens, but I wanted to see the details using an 800mm. Finally, the weather, our orbital track and the daylight cycle came together and I was able to get this shot. The detail is striking. One can see the suspension cables on the bridge.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Egypt
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Egypt: As we were flying over Egypt, I saw that we were in a good alignment with the sun to capture sunglint photos. This technique is very useful for highlighting areas on land with standing water and for observing wave patterns that propagate below the surface of open water (called internal waves). In this case, the sunglint provided a very beautiful portrait. The lake appears as if filled with mercury.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-China
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-China: This shot of the Yellow River is the Eastern part of the river in North Eastern part of China that runs North-South. The texture of the surrounding hilly area creates a nice effect. The air was very clear there. Only a little more to the East, it was very smoggy.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Argentina
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Argentina: We were flying over Argentina and I was waiting to take pictures of a particular river that had been requested by the ground. I suddenly spotted this odd series of lakes. The sunlight was just right to create this interesting color and effect. This is my favorite one, I've nicknamed it "Gecko Lake."  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Ching Hai Hu, China
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Ching Hai Hu, China: This was one of the first picture that I shot of China. I opened the window and there it was! We were in an attitude that looked out horizontally, instead of straight down at the earth. This perspective allows one to capture a long distance in one shot. In this case, I used a 50mm lens to capture the big picture. The lake is very large and dramatic.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Nepal/Chinese border region
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Nepal/Chinese border region: This is a nice overview, using the 50mm lens. The snow-capped Himalayas are readily visible. Note the interesting contrast. In the foreground, is the Indian border, with the Bramaputra river just out of view. the valley is covered in a thick smog layer. This layer however, does not extend up into mountainous Nepal. Beyond the Himalayas, lies China. Several lakes are visible, thanks to the clean air in this sparsely populated area.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Chi Lien Mountains
Astroanut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Chi Lien Mountains: Just behind Ching Hai Hu lie the Chi Lien mountains. Behind this range is located the Chinese launch center, near Jiuquan. I have not yet found the launch site to photograph, but I know where it is now and will try in the future. This photo was taken with a 400mm lens, as one can see from the detail.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-South Africa
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-South Africa: It was a beautiful day in South Africa and I used a 50mm lens to get a good overview of the area. This was another chance shot. I opened the cover and this was the view that filled the window! Days like this, where the weather is so clear, are few and far between.  Read More...

Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Salamat Basin in Chad
Astronaut Leroy Chiao's Space Blog-Salamat Basin in Chad: This is one of my favorite shots. I used a 400mm lens and caught this piece of the Salamat Basin in Chad. The different colors of the sand form an interesting contrast to the rock structures. The tops of the rock look as if they have been sanded down to the same height, while the sides are rough and jagged. There is something very appealing about this one.  Read More...
