StudioLA's Suzanne Kai interviews Jennifer Aniston Star of Rock Star

Suzanne Kai chats with Jennifer Aniston about her role in Rock Star

What happens when your long-time boyfriend suddenly becomes a huge rock star and you're also his manager? Jennifer Aniston is Emily, the girlfriend of Chris Cole played by Mark Wahlberg. Chris worships at the alter of his idol, Bobby Beers, lead singer of heavy metal rock band "Steel Dragon." Chris copies every move and detail as a Bobby Beers look-alike in the best "Steel Dragon" tribute band in Pennsylvania.

Jennifer chats on-camera with StudioLA's Suzanne Kai about her "Rock Star" role, the groupies, the girl with the exploding implants, and her "very, very normal life" with Brad. Jennifer also joined StudioLA's Kent England at a press round table sharing more insights about her life on and off screen.

Suzanne: You were wonderful in "Rock Star," what a good role for you. Can you describe your character?

Jennifer: Thank you! [I'm the] girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg and his manager as well, and I kind of stick by his side during this little rock and roll journey to stardom, and all the craziness that ensues. She takes her leave appropriately when she feels that it's necessary once he starts this whole trip of fame that doesn't really include her.

Suzanne: Your character stayed pretty well grounded in reality, but you were surrounded by other women characters, the groupies, the girlfriends, and the wives. And they just got caught up into the culture and kind of gave up and accepted their fate. But your character was really pretty strong. Pretty rare for the 80's [which was the time period for the movie]?

Jennifer: Yeah. It was sort of when we were putting the part together. When I first read the script there was not really a female role. I mean, it was there, but it was really important to give her some real strength and integrity and not be the "clich?woman." You know, [the] girl - "hang-on." And it was kind of fun to have that contrast with the wives and the groupies.

Suzanne: Are [the roles] pretty accurate? Did you do research on the women [characters] then, and do they exist today as well?

Jennifer: Groupies? [laughter] Yeah! Oh, they do, they do, they do! I saw some pretty amazing things. I witnessed when we were making this movie. It was amazing!

Suzanne: Examples?

Jennifer: Oh gosh, implants exploding in the audience. Guys passing out and puking. I mean they're just...[this] group was insane. I think the most amazing was this chick's implant exploded and she had to be taken to the hospital. She had just gotten them but she wanted to be in this movie so bad!

Suzanne: I also heard women passed out also?

Jennifer: Yes!

Suzanne: So today, this whole situation still exists.

Jennifer: Absolutely. Yes, if they can get into a trailer of some kind, they would do that too.

Suzanne: You have beauty, talent, a successful career yourself, a fabulous husband. Did you ever imagine that your own life would read like a fairy tale story?

Jennifer: When you say it like that [laughter] Oh! Who's that? [laughter] No, I mean it sounds very beautiful. Like I said, as you worded that. Did I ever imagine that? No. I've also never been someone who kind of went, "OK, my life will be like this in ten years." I just knew where I wanted to be out of where I was, and that I wanted to do this, make money making people laugh, or whatever. But it's all very, very normal. All normal problems, and good things and bad things.

Suzanne: You have a new home, [I've read], is it nine bedrooms? Is that for lots of children or houseguests?

Jennifer: [laughter] My god, that number's going up and up and up! [laughter] Oh, it's not nine bedrooms, it's only four! [laughter]

Suzanne: What's in store for your career?

Jennifer: Well, it's not my place to really say. I kind of just wait for the invitations.

Suzanne: We're looking forward to seeing your Fall season in "Friends."

Jennifer: Thank you. Thank you very much!

Jim: Jennifer, so good to see you!

Jennifer: Good to see you! How are you?

Jim: I'm fine, thank you. Congratulations. We go from "The Cell" to "The Wedding Planner."
Would you agree with me, a lot of people don't know about Jennifer Lopez, [that] she's a little bit more like Mary Fiore than the character she's playing?

Jennifer: It's true, I'm a little more relaxed and silly than people might imagine!

Jim: That's what you told me. So you could relate to Mary.

Jennifer: Absolutely.

Jim: There's so much going on in the film. Would you agree that one thing that I loved about it, I'm a fan of the old romantic comedies, that Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy - it's a throwback!

Jennifer: Yeah, a little bit.

Jim: With modern-day attitudes.

Jennifer: Absolutely, you know Adam really wanted, (Adam Shankman is the director) to bring back some of that old romance from those types of pictures into this. He did a really nice job especially with the park scenes and stuff like that. Actually some scenes that were cut out were really beautiful. Unfortunately, [they were] like dance scenes and stuff like that, that he had done. I wish that they would have made it in, because it would have made it really special.

Jim: That little scene with Tony Martin and Janet Lee in the park, it's wonderful stuff.

Jennifer: Yeah, it's so great.

Jim: I just jotted some notes down on what a wedding planner should be. And I'll tell you and your character and you comment.

Jennifer: Okay.

Jim: A wedding planner should be, should be able to give pep talks to brides.

Jennifer: Well, they have to be kinda psychiatrists I think for the whole family, you know. Just to keep everybody, kind of,more calm and at a low stress level.

Jim: Okay. [a wedding planner] has to be a director, like you are doing a movie almost.

Jennifer: It's almost like putting on a stage production. When you do a wedding. There's so much involved. There's set design, and there's places, there's music and bands, so there's kind of, in a way, a stage production. Absolutely.

Jim: In order to do those things too, [the wedding planner] has to be kind of a control freak.

Jennifer: She is definitely a control freak and needs everything in its place and is very meticulous and organized. And it helps her in her job.

Jim: Couple of my favorite scenes Jennifer, I'll comment. You're in an accident, involving Matthew McConaughey. You wake up in this little bed with these kids around you Jennifer: [They're] so cute, so sweet. You know what I mean, because they're poking me and playing with my feet and everything, I'm trying to do my thing, but it was a lot of fun. They were the sweetest kids.

Jim: [It was] a good scene. Another fun scene, but I hear one that you were a little concerned about, I was a little surprised because I know you dance and you do the tango with Matthew in the park.

Jennifer: Um, the tango. It wasn't so much that the dance in the park that was hard, but the tango with all of the dialogue that we had to do and all of the emotional beats of the scene, made it difficult. You know what I mean? Because the tango is a bit of an intricate dance, you know what I mean. And Matthew wasn't a dancer, but he did a great job.

Jim: He was more comfortable on the horse!

Jennifer: Yeah, he totally was. I was uncomfortable in either place, so there you go!

Jim: A thirty-second comment on your co-star Matthew McConaughey - a southern gentlemen?

Jennifer: Such a southern gentlemen. He's so charming and handsome, and down to earth. I mean he's just one of the good ones. You know, one of the best ones out there.

Jim: I've said that, too. I've interviewed him and I've said that about a million times. He's just a nice guy. Congratulations, again. And you'd make a wonderful wedding planner! Thank you.

Jennifer: Thank you!
